Imploding the well

On a recent newscast the CEO of one of the other big companies (Shell, I think) mentioned that in a worst-case scenario, BP could always implode the well.
I admit I know neither jack nor shite about drilling a well, so for those that do can you explain how this would/wouldn't work and (if it would work) why hasn't it been tried yet?

Just seems that could make it so much worse. Oil anmd gas can leak out of so many crevases and that wouls be impossible to control. Then what do we do.

How do they go about imploding a well?

Others "in the know" as in in the industry have said if I remember correctly that that would/could be even more of a disaster ... I dunno.

I think this has reached the level of worst case scenario. Do you?

No, I don't think the hard stuff's gonna come down for a while yet.

it is not a sure thing.
therefore its only a possible approach if all else fails.

I think this involves sending a very small nuke down near the well through a drilled well and detonating it. The power of the bomb is such that it will basically turn the rock and sediment and such within a about 500 yards to glass.
I know it has worked with gas wells. I know some have said it has never been done on an oil well. Others have countered and said that it has. ???? Don't know, don't care. Russia is who has used this in the past.

I am pretty sure that was used on a gas well on dry land. It is a little harder to do this a mile under the gulf.

Problem is the top few thousand feet is rather soft sediment so detonating a bomb would destroy the surface casing and may create a dispersion of the oil flow over a wider area. The mud/rock in the shallow section may not be competent enough to contain the oil once the casing is destroyed.

Here's historic video of the Soviets nuking a gas well. Interestingly, the casing had failed in that case as well, with gas escaping through the ground.
Very interesting to watch:
