And a lot of people could not believe that people like yourself really think that it's possible to boycott BP. BP products are sold at many different brands of gas station by many different retailers. Suppose you could ride a bike and live in the dark.
The reality is that I and others do realize how much production, refining, and sales is swapped around as well as that BP has its hand on many products that do not hold a BP label. But, one does what one can and avoiding the BP stations does affect part of their business - a very visible and easily reported on part. I believe that it will be significant enough to send the message that their behavior is is not tolerated.
Sorry for the hijack - I won't respond to anymore of these on this thread.

As of right now this is an accident. It could have happened just as easily to ExxonMobil or ConocoPhilips but BP got unlucky and it happened to them. To think another oil company would have handled this much better is silly. If BP could stop this they would.

Man I am not even an close to an animal activist probably just the opposite and this depresses me.

Obviously, you have no future in the media. But

The problem is that reactionaries will only point to wildlife in this incident. When in fact the most important things are 11 people died, economic impact and jobs.
WINSTON WOLF - I'm going to go out on a limb and guess a) you aren't even minimally participating in the efforts to save our environment from this disaster and b) you haven't even inquired if there were some way you could assist the families of those who were lost.
Anyone (including you WINSTON WOLF) who has time to be he here posting, lurking or whatever... You have time to make a donation to a cause relating to this tragedy.

Perspective is needed.
Here's my perspective. The human lives that were lost are a tragedy. I couldn't even imagine what their friends and families are going through. With all due respect, though... It is no secret that working on an oil rig is dangerous business. There's a reason for the emphasis on safety (which is why there are so few major injuries sustained on the job). But when something goes wrong - it's usually really wrong. The risks are something you accept when you take the job.
Now for the animals....
I'm not going to argue animal lives vs. human lives here... I'll just jot down a couple of the things that are going through my head (either you will understand where I'm coming from or you won't):
* The loss of at least one endangered species (plant, animal, fish or whatever) is likely... There are surely going to be species wiped out of existence because of this. If not now, within a generation.
* The loss of marine life and its toll on the communities who rely upon it.
* The pain that untold number of animals will feel as they slowly die of a)poisoning from ingesting oil/diluting chemicals/tainted food supply b)Suffocation by getting covered with oil/oil in lungs or gills
* No matter how the issues are spun - It's impossible to say "The animals brought this on themselves"
* There's nothing we can do to save those 11 lives lost now... The death toll will rise daily for the animals for weeks, months and years to come.

It breaks my heart to see those images. I live out here for 1/2 my life. It's nice to get up in the morning and look over the side and see dolphins, the different fish species and the turtles cruising through. Some so old that they have barnicles like little cities on their shells. I do not allow anything over the side for these reasons. If you smoke there is a place for the butts. You throw overboard and you will pack your bags. I take these things and my job very seriously. This is just sad. Whatever the reason for the explosion I can gaurantee somebody fricked up at their job. Out here you don't frick up!
Ok, thanks.
Ok, thanks.

Are the turtles still edible?
Posted on 5/3/10 at 8:00 am to terd ferguson
Several reports out now that say that turtles have been washing up for a month or more. Also that none of the 20 had oil on them. Some conjecture that it could be related to the early opening to the offshore shrimp season that was allowed to let the shrimpers to try and harvest as much as they could prior to closures or other shutdowns. Suspect that many of the posters pointing the finger at BP don't know what a TED is or why they are required.

this kind of thing actually happens pretty frequently in nature...I don't like it, but if the cause is nothing that man had control over, then I don't have that big a problem with it....
This... Turtles wash up all the time on the gulf coast this time of year
