Not sure if this has been posted. That does not appear to be a great deal for a small child to get through and into the moat.

Thank you for posting. Apparently you've got to be the world's worst parents in order for your 4 year old to basically flip over that rail and walk into the moat.

On another note, it appear the gorillas aren't supposed to go into the moat either. Seems like that line of defense failed.

Not only that, but there is only 4 feet between the barrier and the dropoff. The child probably got through the bush and had maybe a foot before falling in.

holy shite

so after seeing that pic I would definitely have a hold of my 3/4 year old near that

but yeah...that is also on the zoo for not having some type of catch net/cage on the drop off

that would seem like common sense from a liability stand point

I have 3.5 and 1.5 YO boys, who are maddeningly independent. They are always by my side, but holy shite that scares the crap out of me. I could glance over to my wife and my 3yo could be through that and in the moat in the blink of an eye.

Fair, but they could have run off from a distance too. Hopefully we'll get some sort of surveillance footage that puts it all to rest.

It appears the moat is supposed to be a line of defense from the gorillas as well. Basically they're supposed to stay on the island. The kid made it half way and the gorilla came to meet him apparently. There is no denying that the system failed.

You're like the rest of us, but according to the OT, you're a POS parent who isn't worthy of raising kids.

Hell, in the picture Ragin posted, it wouldnt take more than a slight slip of the feet for the kid in the picture to fall over

just seems like a net would/should be there to keep things/people from falling into the moat

Yeah definitely. I mean it doesn't take much effort to envision a scenario where a kid or adult steps over the railing and is in the moat in 3 feet.

I hope there is more than that picture. More security that is not abundantly clear. I found that on Reddit this morning (so I hope it is accurate). I'm not a big "blame the business" person, but that is likely terrifying to all parents of small, precocious children.

Seems pretty accurate after looking at this graphic. Those 2 security features are a joke. Not for a sane adult, but for a small child who can't comprehend the danger.

I love how they title it "3-feet tall stainless steel barrier" what it is just posts and a guard rail with a stainless wire every 12".

Also, once that gorilla took him back up the ladder all bets were off. He had to go down, but we knew that already.

Wow, I didn't realize the gorilla toted the boy back up the ladder into its habitat.

It is to me. I mean 38 years of this never happening seems more like luck than anything else. I've got small kids and to act like that system is safe is disingenuous. You slip and fall with a kid in your arms and he/she is toast too.

right?

with no down wire?

holy hell I can't comprehend how a zoo would have this as an enclosure

just from a pure liability standpoint, how the hell has a lawyer from the zoo not seen that and said something?

I bet there are some tight butthole meetings around that zoo this week.

Could be. The same could be said for a lot of state parks with cliffs, slippery rocks around water, wildlife that could attack you, etc.

This entire incident boils down to "shite happens."

The zoo isn't at fault, the child isn't at fault and the parents arent at fault.
