Some local guys just did something like this. I think a few dropped out for school in the fall and a couple continued on. They kayaked a good part of the coast though and biked the rest.

My wife and I spent 2 weeks in Amsterdam staying for free at a friends place just off Prinsegracht (sp) canal while he was at the World Cup in south africa. Just lived like a local. Grocery shopped, went to the gym, bought a bicycle and rode everywhere. Did some yard work for my buddy in his backyard....cleared out a dead tree, mowed the yard....left the little plant that had self seeded though...., fixed the door on his little bedroom cabin in the back.

My favorite was our honeymoon, not just because it was that occassion but the way we did it. We went to a small condo on Ambergris Caye in Belize and stayed for about 9 days. We went down the road for a walk each morning and picked up fresh eggs, tortillas, and other things to make our own meals. We also ate at many random little restaurants that had 3 tables and tried to immerse ourselves as much as possible. It was very relaxed and we didn't plan for much except our 3 excursions. I could go on and on, but I won't.

I'm so glad we went that route. It gave us an experience no all-inclusive resort could ever try to give.

Im going to get beat up over this but favorite was Jamaica, white house sandals on southeast coast. Dive, dance, pools, snorkel, food, service, time of year (june).

2nd favorite is always the camp in the atchafalaya spillway, on main channel out of bayou sorrel.
