They know that most of the stuff that goes into dog food would be sent to landfills otherwise, right?

What's dumb about his point is even high end food are made with offal and other cuts of meat not really for people. Even the premium Buffalo and elk stuff comes from byproduct of the meat butchered for human consumption.
Dog food was invented as a way to get rid of surplus horsemeat after ww1. Before then there was no such thing as "dog food" dogs ate scraps.
Dog food helps use meat products that wouldn't be used and provides a use for old horses in the US.
