quote:

Most eerily, gone were the people. The iconic valley, usually smothered in tourists this time of year, was instead blanketed in plumes from a raging nearby 38,000-acre wildfire that forced evacuations and turned one of the country’s most popular national parks into a virtual ghost town on Wednesday afternoon. The closing is the largest in nearly three decades at the park.

Visitors were given until noon to leave. An hour later, the usually teeming cafeteria was dark, its chairs on the tables. Parking lots were empty. Campgrounds were cleared. The front door of the famous Majestic Yosemite Hotel, best known as the Ahwahnee, was padlocked with a chain.

Crazy. Yosemite is packed this time of year.

I’ve been there the last 4 nights. Made us check out by 9:00 this morning and out of the valley by 12:00. Eased on up to Tahoe and got a room at harrahs only to find out luke Bryan is playing here tonight. Not only was my Yosemite trip ruined, but now Tahoe too...

Crazy, we were just there a few weeks ago and it was packed. Must have been crazy traffic on the way out!

It wasn’t that bad. There weren’t very many people in the valley due to the smoke. Yosemite valley lodge appeared to only be about half full. You could drive and park pretty much anywhere you wanted the last few days.

We made the best of it and saw as much as we could. I liked that it wasn’t so crowded. The smoke got worse as the day wore on, mornings were fairly clear. I was surprised at the amount of foreigners there. I heard more French, German, Japanese, and Spanish than I did English.

Yosemite is one of the most majestic places on the planet, if not the most.
I feel bad for all those affected by this fire. Sad that there are so many fires in Motherlode.
