I bought that 72 in about 1995. I
my older sister had the '71 when she was at Tech, dad bought her new Cougar when she graduated and she gave that to me my senior year of hs, my other sister had the "72 when she was at LSU, she also got a new Cougar and gave the '72 to me my junior year at LSU, I think, those two cars made me vow that when I could afford it I'd never have a second hand car again, they let me down so many times

Mine was great. Yours were probably assembled on Monday, when the workers were hung over.

more than likely
they extended the LTD for a couple of years after, forget what they called it but it was like the size of the Mercury Marquis, they definitely built them for comfort back then

Not really, the Suburban was introduced way earlier (1930s).
I don't know why they didn't really take off until the 1980s and 1990s.
I guess women didn't care to drive a truck platform back then. Or it could be that travel ball didn't show up until the early 2000s.

Might find one of these under the back seat.

true, Ford even had the Scout but both those were targeted for men primarily, someone hit a grand slam when they came up for the SUV concept

Ford introduced teh Bronco in the 60s I think
ETA: not trying to argue. My dad had an old international truck when I was little for a run around truck and load down with firewood truck. I absolutely loved the Scout.
Also Jeep had the grand wagoner in the 60s, might have been before the Bronco.

This is definitely a thing. Also, I would never knowingly buy one assembled on Friday afternoon.

forerunner of the SUV,
SUVs are station wagons. People driving SUVs just don't want to admit that.

I remember baking in the sun behind those big back windows driving across Oklahoma.

I had the 351 Windsor, which was the economy option back then. Still, when properly tuned, I could almost reach 20mpg on the highway.
