I once got a check for 14k when it was supposed to be 1400. Yeah, I told them about it and gave the check back.

That's because you most likely deserved it and they were just testing you to see what you were made of. We do it pretty often at our office with different things. It is truly a great way to learn what someone is made of. It doesn't make or break anything but you know who to trust and who is the first to get let go.

I noticed my balance of vacation hours was too high and let HR know about it.

That was probably a genuine mistake. We do a couple of different character test from dropping money on the floor to see if someone just picks it up or ask around all the way to making a pay mistake. We also do some secret shopper and efficiency test.

That's not a mistake. Women and minorities are getting paid more than white males in larger companies. We deal with this a lot.
