That's actually ideal. Track is just warming up and would prefer spring baseball

His type are all too common at the ballpark. One guy at our park comes to mind in particular. He's got a set of twin boys the same age as my son. Every year he'd go right up to the line of getting thrown out for good but knew just how far he could push things. He actually coached for a while. I remember the last year they let him coach was our kids' first year of 7&8 coach pitch. He was the 3rd base coach and I was the manager (or HC as some leagues call it) of the team. Every game he'd yell and berate his two boys to the point they'd both be out there in tears. I felt bad for those boys. I finally told him to not address any kid, even his own unless they were going to 2nd or 3rd base.

Sad thing is now they are almost 13 and are two of the worst bullies in the school. They were on one of the other 11&12 teams this season. I was talking to the manager of the team they played on (he and I coached together for the past several season before this one). He described them both as a "cancer" in his dugout. Those boys did not turn out the way they did by accident. They were made into what they've become.

I understand that man, that's why I clearly said in my post that you quoted wait until you can get out there and talk to him man to man.

No way to send a polite corrective email, whit always comes off sour

This reminded me of an incident from my son's t-ball days that could have turned out bad but thankfully didn't.

At that time the "pitcher" did not wear the mask and chest protector they do now. They just wore their cap like everyone else. We were up to bat and one thing I always did was keep my hand on the ball and told my batter to not swing until I moved my hand and told them to swing. I'd always look out at the field and make sure the kids there were at least looking towards home, especially the pitcher since they were so close to the plate.

The kid up to bat was my neighbors kid and he was already one of those that could swing for the fences. I did everything like normal, everyone was watching. But as soon as I picked my hand up and said swing I saw the little girl in the pitcher's circle just totally zone out. Before I could say a word he sent a rocket straight for her face. Thankfully the ball climbed just enough to clip the top of her hat, flipping it off the back of her head but not touching her. The girl never even blinked. The ball went to the fence. Had it been a few inches lower it would have hit her square in the face. The funny part was that she finally snapped out of her daze when she realized her hat was not on top of her head. First thing she did was look up and put her hand on top of her head. She then looked around and finally saw her hat laying behind her. She picked it up and then went back to standing there totally unaware how close she'd just come to serious injury. I went from terrified, to relieved, to finally bust out laughing all in a matter of seconds.

A guy I used to work with had a son who played baseball and basketball in HS. Not a particularly big kid at all, maybe 5'-9" or 5'-10", and very lean at age 15 or 16. Anyway, the local playground was near our office, and the son, who we all knew, was Umpire that night, so a few of us went to the baseball game that night.

For the entire game, some a-hole was yellIng at the kid, bitching about balls and strikes, etc. The boy kept his cool and never reacted, but his dad was getting more and more pissed as the situation progressed. Finally, a-hole dad - who was a big guy - charges onto the diamond to complain about a call at home
plate. He's in the kid's face, wagging his finger and SCREAMING at him, but the kid stays cool and just let's the guy go off. My co-worker, who is about 5'-8" on his tippy toes, is out there about 15 seconds later. The idiot dad, who was about 6" taller and outweighed my friend by at least 80#, immediately backed down when this crazy little Italian guy started threatening to whip his arse for abusing his son.

The cops working security were there pretty quickly. Both adults initially got escorted out, but they let my friend back in after about a dozen witnesses all said that the one guy was the instigator. It's was nuts...

The son/ump was largely unphased. When asked about the situation after the game, he said, "They told us that we'd get yelled at..."

Yeah I can see going out there to have your son's back when some a-hole wants to start a fight with him. I'd do the same and have zero issue with anyone else protecting their kid in the same manner.

ETA: Love the kid's reaction.

Seriously, the whole situation was bizarre...

I said my friend was out there in 15 seconds, bit it might have been even less. As soon as the crazy guy got chest to chest, my co-worker charged out of the stands without saying a word. A couple us walked to the edge of the dugout, in case they actually started fighting, but like I said, Harahan PD (best known for BS speeding tickets) was on the case pretty quickly!

We had a lot of fun with it at work, after the fact. But while it was happening, it wasn't funny at all.

Update:

Called and scheduled a face to face meeting after my kid's game tomorrow. Yes, we're staying with the league for the last game.

I've seen some situations at the ballpark that looked like they could get out of hand but thankfully none ever did. I don't know how it is there but here in Alabama if you get into a fight with an umpire, you're arse is going to jail and not see the light of day for a looong time.
