My grandfather was a tank mechanic in WW2. One of the grizzly parts about that job was repairing tanks that had been damaged in combat. Imagine for a moment having to repair a tank in which the crew inside was blown to bits. The blood and guts and other remains literally had to be washed out of them... My grandfather lost 9 buddies during the Normandy invasion, so details about his service rarely were spoken about, but one of the few stories I remember him telling was about the day General Patton came and stood atop the tank he was working on at the time.

my Dad was in Koln in April of 1945...in 1981 we climbed together to the top of the cathedral for him to look around...he was absolutely bound and determined to look from up there...he pointed out to me where the only open street in the city was when he was there in 1945...
