I like the movie, it was anti-fascist camp directed by a European socialist from the Netherlands. It has some good and funny stuff.
If you have not read the book, the book is nothing like the movie. The book looks at why men fight, what a society of responsibility would look like. Heinlein dedicated his book to the sergeants out there who lead men.

Stormtrooper?
Schutzstaffel.
Say Vader in the emperor's voice.
Then say Fuhrer.
Not to mention they were using AT-ATs

quote:The coming of the Roman Empire was discussed and predicted in the Old Testament. Throughout the Bible God has alluded to the fact that he can and will use foreign non-believers to discipline his children.
The “John From” cults that developed in some of these areas that were occupied by the Americans, are truly fascinating. Read up on them.
I think that Christianity most likely had a very similar origin , with less developed Judean tribes encountering the Roman empire. That plus the Roman occupation of Judea probably created various cults based on traditional Jewish beliefs that tried to tackle the fact that their all powerful god had not prevented their conquest at the hands of a superior pagan force.

Civilians and soldiers alike have witnessed what looked like Science fiction on the battlefield for centuries due to technology outpacing the tactics. WW2 was just one of the more recent instances. German soldiers seeing tanks roll through no man's land at The Somme in 1915, the citizens of Memphis standing on the bluffs 50+ years earlier watching gun boats and rams get sunk by ironclads a few hundred yards away on the MS River and then you have Tripolitanian rebels siding with the USA 60+ years before that because they were terrified of a country being able to successfully fight a logistics war 5000 miles away from its shores. You can move the clock in the other direction if you want. Saddam Hussein's Medina tank divisions that had defeated Iran were suddenly fighting M1A1 Abrams in 1991 that could engage them while moving 30 mph through the desert in the dark and didn't miss. Those troops couldn't surrender fast enough. More like a horror movie unfolding in front of you than Sci-fi but you get the picture.
