There's a Darkside of the Ring episode about it.
At the time many thought it was Jim Ross's way to get his Oklahoma baw Steve Williams over. Bart Gunn had other ideas and knocked his arse out. Neither of their careers rebounded.

WWE held a shoot boxing/MMA-style tournament in the late 90s... called Brawl for All
I think WWE hoped the tournament would make a star out of Dr. Death Steve Williams... but he lost to eventual winner Bart Gunn... who was put in a boxing match with Butterbean at Wrestlemania XV and Gunn was knocked out in 35 seconds and fired shortly after
several wrestlers suffered real, career-ending injuries during the Brawl for All... including Steve Blackman, Road Warrior Hawk, the Godfather, & Savio Vega

Yeah apparently Jim Ross and Jim Cornette were all about it until Dr. Death got rocked and injured. Then they totally changed their opinions on it and called it the stupidest thing ever.
