I have a bunch of my grandfather's old stuff (he was a WW2 vet) and found a random dog tag from another soldier. I know nothing about this man except for what's on his tags. Anyone know how to go about finding more about him? I have no idea how to translate a tag. Any help is much appreciated,

yeah birthdate is not on there, you wanna try and keep that hidden. Not a lot of birthday parties in the military nor does that have anything to do with identifying you.

I stand corrected.

Was going off memory from a long time ago.

Thanks

All good. It was a bad day if your buddies knew it was your birthday.

Google is your friend. There are many military affiliated groups that help in getting info for people like that. I was able to get Navy service records for my grandpa from his service through a group formed by relatives of service members from the ship he served on.

I tried a couple of Google searches, but they ask for things like "birth date" which I have no idea of....also, I don't really want to post a pic. Seems like that should stay private.

Update...I found a bunch of photos that my grandpa took in Guam during the war. He was an amateur photographer. These pictures are amazing. Very humbling.

Interesting info at the link. Never know though, could open a can of worms that’s better left alone.
