Among other things, I program my dishwasher to kickoff in the middle of the night. I think that helps.
Woah.
Best post I've read all day.

Stupid question, I know. Our new house is not on a slab (not trashy, historic district). Do I have to crawl under the house to wrap the water pipes or can I just wrap the faucets? This is our first house that's not on a concrete slab.
Close the flood vents with the flaps or tape plastic over them with duct tape, the drip the faucets and you should be good to go in the deep south.
Pipes freeze normally, down here, when cold air is allowed to sweep over them in sub freezing conditions and the water inside the pipe is stagnant ... which mostly happens during the coldest hours at night, in the dark.\
So cut off the airflow underneath the house and drip the faucets and you should be fine provided you keep your house warm.

We recently moved to KC this year from Texas. When living in Texas we always covered water spouts, etc. anytime it got in the 20's. I asked my neighbors here and they all just laughed. Nobody up here does it. It was -3 here this morning and our pipes etc were fine.
After thinking about it, in all my time in Texas I never heard of someone having a busted pipe due to cold weather.

I simply drive my house somewhere warmer for the night.

Wait, so this thread isn't about leaky bongs?
