I'm with you here.

Don't think this entire thread is douche bags. You're doing better than 99% of the people here.

Doing so would weaken your friendship.

Inadvertently, a debt would be created and your friends would fall into a subservient role in your formally equal interpersonal dynamics.

Not to mention possibly filing ownership of their fenced areas after 7 or 10 years. I forget.

Altruistic thought but quit thinking about it and move on.

If close proximity is supposed to happen, something will come available in good time.

Yep. Where exactly are they living that they have this much land?

And op, you can say trailer instead of portable house. We know what you mean.

Yes we all have social security numbers, driver's licenses, and all that stuff. We are not anti government or preppers or any of that crazy crap. We are just normal people who live a rural life.

Evolved Simian:

Where on earth do you live that the nearest school is 30 miles away?

The nearest public school is 5 miles away and completely unacceptable (rated an F by the state). The nearest private schools are 30 miles away.

We are well north of Baton Rouge in a rural area. Large properties here are common.

By portable house we do NOT mean a trailer. We mean an actual house constructed so that it can be moved if they find land around here one day to buy or so their kids can move the house one day.

This is my main objection, besides whatever legal reasons which I am unqualified to opine about besides recommending that you consult a lawyer. There's a decent chance that they will resent you because they feel they owe you and project an attitude of superiority onto you even when you don't present one. And there is a decent chance that you will presume that they owe you and pass boundaries with them because of it. There are issues when these attitudes would arise where they may not be able to do with the property where their home is located what they wish because their home isn't really theirs.

Personally, I wouldn't be able to abide living by the charity of others and under the constant strain of feeling like I needed to pay it back.

I know of a situation like this, the two families sill live on the same land, but have not spoken to each other in over a decade. Nether party ever leaves their house un-occupied for fear the other will burn it down. People are always talking up the virtues of rural living, but I have heard countless stories of ongoing feuds between neighbors in the country. I may get a neighbor in the city that doesn't like me, but they probably won't shoot at my house or steal the fuel out of my tractor.
