its not like all private schools will take them.
Last time they did this it was 2nd tier "private" schools that took them and in some cases newly formed ones to take advantage of the vouchers and they all sucked.

100%. This is one of the major reasons we're taking my daughter out of her private school. Why the hell would I pay ~25k for my 2 kids (son starting kindergarten) when a bunch of people just get to come for free!?
It was once explained to me by an aging public school administrator
"If private schools act/look/perform like public schools, they'll cease to exist. Parents pay to keep their children away from some of that bullshite."
"If the quality of education becomes the same or even similar, why pay extra?"

If your student is enrolled in a private school, you should get a tax deduction, so that you aren't paying for someone else's child's education in a public institution.
If this works retired people that never had children should get a tax deduction. The highest amount of my property taxes are for the schools.

I support School of Choice if it is available to all children. I do not support it if it is just used as welfare in an attempt to send kids to private school that otherwise could not.
Rather than create these programs, you should just get a tax credit for the amount of tuition (or at least like 50% of tuition) of private school.

Texas doesn't have state income tax but there is the dependent care FSA on the federal level that allows you to set aside $5k without tax for daycare. I don't think it allowed for private schools but a simple fix.

Vouchers? frick no.
The ones using them up are the ones you sent your kid to private school to get away from.
frick that shite.

It'd be more likely to lift solid middle class families. $10k doesn't come close to covering a full year's tuition.

Your school doesn't have to change it's admissions process.
At my kid's school, it's:
Children of teachers
Siblings of current students
Parishioners
Then lastly, it's based upon when you applied
I doubt "undesirables" are going to be online waiting to submit their application the moment that admissions open, if they were that much on their game they wouldn't be "undesirable"

That would depend on the area and on the quality and standing of the school.
Vouchers would affect the smallest (and therefore youngest) private schools.

10k would cover the majority of private schools here in Lafayette. The only schools that wouldn't cover would be the two Episcopal schools and ASH/Berchman's.

It also decreases funds for the schools that need funding the most.
They should cut admins then so more money could go to people that actually improve the schools

Never underestimate the power of free (or discounted) to motivate. I mean, look at fast food places that offer "free burger" days. There are lines around the block before the place opens. Or black friday stampedes.

The basic problem with public education - no one wants to teach but many will gladly serve as the assistant guidance counselor for the fourth grade.

You get no argument from me. My wife is a public school teacher. I see how much waste goes on. School budgets are as bloated as military and medicare budgets.

These people obviously don't care about their kid's education, otherwise their kids would be doing fine in whatever public school they are in. Sure, it's something "free", but it's not something tangible that they care about. Sure, there are some folks who would go out of their way to submit their applications early, but your average hoodrat is not going to care about that at all.
