the war was a mistake because we went about it all wrong. it could have easily been korea part 2 and who knows, maybe south vietnam would have flourished like south korea has

It was basically Korea Part 2. We forced North Vietnam to sign the Treaty of Paris in 73 which ended the war in pretty much the same manner The Korean War ended. What makes Vietnam different is once this war ended we abandoned the South. The liberal democrats in congress voted to cut off all aid to South Vietnam. And while we abandoned South Vietnam, the Soviets wastes no time in pouring tons of arms, equipment, and supplies to North Vietnam. By 1975 while the ARVN was now an empty shell of the force that had crushed the NVA during the Easter Offensive of 1972, the NVA was fully ready for war. And it was in 1975 that the North struck the South and overran them while the South's pleas to the US to honor their treaty obligations and help them fell on deaf ears. Thus, South Vietnam's fate was sealed.

As for the question in the OP, you're damn right I'd have answered my country's call. I answered it in 1988 when I enlisted in the Army. I don't see any reason why I'd have not done the same in 1968.

It's not the movies that influenced me but the real life Vietnam veterans with mental issues that I've met that have. Don't be fooled into thinking a lot of young, misled men weren't psychologically screwed up by it. Since you brought of the pot smoking draft dodgers I will point out the fact that a lot of the Vietnam veterans came back drug addicted as well
They were probably gung ho and all for it going in though.....

Yes

It was probably a lot cooler than Iraq. There was beer, weed and Asian hookers.

I would've said no until I read "The Things They Carried" by Tim O'Brien. After that, I would've gone if I was drafted. Something about that book made me want to be there.

You bring up a great point here. Tet was an unmitigated disaster for the communists. The Vet Cong were effectively wiped out and the NVA was bled white. American and ARVN forces won one of the most lopsided victories in the history of warfare in the Tet Offensive.

We could have been in Hanoi within a couple weeks and taken little to no casualties on the way had we counterattacked on the heels of our overwhelming victory in crushing the Tet Offensive. In fact, it wasn't until 1972 until the NVA could undertake any offensive actions. And when they did (The Easter Offensive), once again they were totally crushed, this time by the ARVN mostly on their own as we had already pulled out almost all our ground forces by that time.

Yes. 1) My family and myself would've been ashamed of me if I didn't go if I got drafted

My uncle was in the Air Force and did a tour. My father's number was getting close so he loaded up the VW bus and headed to Canada. His dad served in WWII, his brother served in Vietnam....but he hauled arse to Canada. Needless to say, he was not a big hit with the rest of the fam.

I would have gone.

My dad had no choice. Did his time in the jungles of Vietnam. Only story I ever got out of him about his time there was when he left it.

That usually means he was in the shite. The Vietnam vets I've met that were really in the shite won't talk. You can't even get one story out of the ones that were really in some bad fights.

They had a draft. And unless you were some pussy arse phaggit, you did your duty. No telling what the millenial bitches would do nowadays with a draft. Probably all run off .

Yes because not wanting to die in a artillery bombardment or getting fricked by jungle traps makes you a pussy instead of a sensible human being.

No, that part is common sense. No one wants to die in an artillery strike. It's the whole letting someone else go in your place that makes you a pussy.
