I bought a Ford from Hertz and it was fine for a while. Until the day it caught on fire in front of the nursery school when I was dropping off my son. It was fixable, but I never felt safe in it again and sold it to get a new Jeep.

That was in the 90s; I'm sure it's different now.

I bought one once, 30k miles, Nissan Pathfinder. Kept it for 2 years. Had 0 problems. Traded it back in and got great value.

In 2015 I bought a 2013 Hyundai Sonata with 48000 miles on it. Best $15000 I ever spent. Got it from Slidell Hyundai. It was a rental. Haven't had the first problem with it.

Every rental I've ever gotten has been fully loaded. It seems the manufacturers give them good deals to showcase their best product with the intention that you will take your settlement money and buy their product.

Have been driving one for 5 years no problems at all, will buy another rental when I need to replace this one. Everyone wants you to believe they turn in to the next demolition derby champion as soon as they slide into a rental but it is 99.9% just B.S. There is very little you could do to a car just driving it that would cause more harm than the lack of maintenance which you have a much greater chance of encountering buying from a individual or a dealer.

I bought a 2011 Nissan Murano rental with 30k miles. Now it’s at 140k miles and all I’ve done is routine maintenance.

I bought one, zero issues with it. Well until it got stolen in New Orleans East.

It was a 2007 Nissan Xterra.

I got rear ended when I was in college and was in a rental for about two weeks while my tuck was being fixed. Pontiac Vibe. My god that was a shite car I tortured that thing for two weeks, but I was young and stupid, I rent cars frequently for work and try to drive them just as I would my own vehicle. I treat my company truck the same, but most everyone does not, some people are assholes when they aren't having to pay to maintain the vehicle.

You don’t really know if the used car you are considering was privately owned by someone that couldn’t afford the maintenance. You don’t know if they let their teenaged son drive it.

Rental company will typically at least keep the tires, windshield, and brakes in good condition and occasionally change the oil.

Unless you are buying from someone you know, I don’t see any more risk in a used rental car with no collision repairs in its history than any other used car with similar records, lease returns, etc.
All of this.

I’ve sold used cars for 3 years.

I have seen no correlation between a vehicle’s rental history and that vehicle being a bad/unreliable vehicle.

Zero. None.

In 2001 I bought my wife a former rental with 35,000 miles on it. She drives like a bat out of hell to Atlanta everyday and other than an A/C compressor and a window cable, it gave us zero problems until 2006 when it hit 190,000.

Let me tell you something my father ask me one time...what is the difference between a 4 wheel drive truck and a rental car.? There are some places a 4 wheel drive truck can’t go. This may provide some guidance.

Bought both of my nephews rental trucks.
I bought these in California at a Rental sales lot.

One was Nissan Frontiet 4-door 4x4
-Been 8 yrs, truck still looks good as he keeps it up, and refuses to sell it. He says it is in great shape and works fine.

Other nephew
Chevy Colorado 4- door 4x4
- beat the it up pretty good as he uses it as an off-road 4x4 in the Deserr.
- 6 yrs old and somehow cranks
- has it tricked out only uses it as a off-road 4x4
- He is very rough on vehicles I would never buy him a new vehicle.
