I can see how someone might think that goldens are dumb. My GF's roommate, and her BF have two and they act goofy, and fatuous, and just kind of look like they are dumb.

But I know that they are actually pretty intelligent for an animal, and they are among the sweetest, and most-caring dogs out there.

If you go to the nation's most dangerous ghettos or the most squalid trailer parks, you will not see a Golden Retriever.

Case closed.

They usually have a blank stare like they have the mental capacity of a goldfish.

that's the dog recognizing it's superior to you and ignoring you. to answer your question, no. There is no way people loved Golden Retrievers before Air Bud

Goldens are sweeter and more obsessively loyal in my experience. I like all dogs, including doodles, so it's not really a knock on doodles. I just think goldens are perfection and it's not really impossible to improve on them.

I'd like to see a study that backs that up.

Here is one that ranks them 4th.

Thisis the expanded list.

Pretty much everywhere you look is the same study that lists them as 4th highest in intelligence among dog breeds.

Completely agree. The last golden retriever I had was such an incredible dog that after he passed I didn’t want another GR because he could never live up to the previous one

I got a boxer instead, and have had him for 9 years... he is a GREAT family dog with a great demeanor and personality and he is beyond great with my kids and the 15 other ones that find their way to my house

I highly recommend GRs for any young family and also highly recommend boxers for a young family who has experience in raising dogs
