I actually know this one. Bra is actually an abbreviation of brassiere. From the French.
And panties comes from pantaloons, which were originally multiple pieces of fabric. You'd have a pant for each leg, which you'd pull up from the foot and then attach to the shirt and tie around the waist. So you'd wear a pair of pants, just like a pair of socks or shoes.
Now eventually, some crafty fellow combined the pants and the waist holder into one garment, but we kept the pair.
Clothing history is pretty fascinating.
