When my cousin's husband proposed, they were totally broke and couldn't afford a real ring. So he got down on his knees, proposed, and after she said "yes" he looped a piece of string around her finger, tied it off neatly, and told her he'd get her a real ring when they could afford it. They eventually did get a traditional ring and twenty years and three kids later they're still together. But she keeps that worn piece of string in a safe place because it's the real ring to her.

I love stories like that.

And a good woman would love you with whatever you propose to her with but if you are looking to actually purchase a ring, ask her opinion.

Would you be offended if she had the ring appraised after you gave it to her?

she has to wear this everyday and y’all can barely dress yourselves and you’re wanting to pick out a ring?!?

the fact that the ring registers even a smidge of interest from the girl is sad.

That’s not a fair assumption. Suppose someone gave a sweater as a gift but you didn’t like it, would you wear it? Does that make you an ungrateful a-Hole? No it’s means it’s not your taste.

Nope. I bought it through a friend that was a private dealer and I had it appraised by a 3rd party. I knew what it was worth.

But she was also free to have it appraised by a 4th party if she so please.

I had to have a certified appraisal for insurance anyway.

Do you really think that's a good comparison?

It’s all I had.

My point being, don’t judge someone else’s taste because it’s not your own.

Again, if you are going to purchase a ring that she’s has to wear at least let her give some input. Now if she’s all about size, and quality you might have an issue there.

If you spent a lot, would you want it insured? You need an appraisal or receipt if you do.

Do you have an ex who burned you? I’m trying to imagine a life where I’m married to a man who thinks I’m with him for his money, and gets offended by this stuff. I would imagine you’d know if she were super materialistic before you proposed, surprise or not.

Yes. I was even surprised myself.

She had no idea. We actually had to wait over 2 years after we got engaged before we got married, and even after we got married didn’t live together the first 6 months.

They don’t understand it’s not about how much or how big it is.

She’s not. Thankfully she’s not a pretentious, materialistic gold digger.

OTers want instagram models, then complain if she’s only with him for the money. Weird.
