Woman wrongfully convicted of killing 3 kids in house fire released from California prison
A woman who was wrongfully convicted of murdering her three children in a house fire in 1993 has been released from prison.
In 1989, JoAnn Parks’ kids were killed in an electrical fire in their bedroom in Los Angeles. However, faulty science led investigators to conclude it was arson and Parks was arrested, tried and convicted. She was sentenced to life without parole, according to The California Innocence Project.
In 2011, after more than two decades of advances in fire science, an Arson Review Panel reviewed Parks’ case and concluded the fire was most likely an accident and the experts who testified against Parks were not properly educated in how fire behaves.
“Ultimately, the Panel concluded that, by modern standards, none of the allegedly incriminating evidence against Joann would withstand scrutiny today,” the Innocence Project attorneys said. “The investigators and jury were misled by bad science, or no science at all.”
Tuesday, after years of working with the California Innocence Project, Parks, 54, was finally released from prison, more than nine months after Gov. Gavin Newsome granted her clemency and the parole board agreed to release her. Parks was the first person sentenced to life without parole to be granted a parole hearing, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune.
“Nothing could be worse than losing your children and then being wrongfully convicted of their murder,” Justin Brooks, director of the California Innocence Project, said in a statement. “As we learn more about the science of fires, hopefully these kinds of wrongful convictions will no longer occur.”
That is a whole lot of suck.

Huge kudos to her
If I lost my kids in that way and got put in jail for life for it I would’ve ended it pretty quickly

And men OR women get it the worst from both guards and other prisoners for killing kids. I can't even imagine what her life was like. No friends. No family. And even the guards probably treated her like shite. How do you re-enter society? Is having your friends and family just say "sorry for not believing you." ever enough after that long? Man that is fricking ROUGH.

So this wasn’t settled science with nothing left to learn? Glad there’s some of that left.

You'll get argued with by some on that point, but they really do.

Yeah, I obviously always feel bad for those people that were wrongfully convicted and serve 20 or 30 years. But for killing your own kids? No one will stand by you. I feel bad for her, and I hope she is compensated and can move to some remote island and start over.

Hopefully people are opening their eyes are realizing how corrupt our legal system is. I will not call it a justice system, no justice is served by our legal system.

"Our bad! Sorry you spent the last 30 years in prison. Have fun re-arranging the shattered remnants of your life!"

So they release a lot of illegals who are rapist/murderers/etc but keep people like her in...

Kamala Harris does not approve letting her out of jail.

Yes it can be because the people in charge of making sure it doesn’t hand down a sentence of this nature doesn’t give a DAMN. Experts aren’t really experts at all and fool good people on a jury that can’t be expected to know scientific aspects of a challenging case like this. No easy answer but the lawyers and judges should see to it that this doesn’t happen and they don’t. You can see what a fantastic job they are doing running the country at the moment. She should be given a home and enough money to live out her life comfortably. That is the LEAST that should be done.

This kind of case is why I oppose the death penalty.
