A woman was injured after she jumped out of the window of her six-story apartment during a two-alarm fire Sunday night at a senior community on Read Boulevard West, according to the New Orleans Fire Department.
Three New Orleans police officers helping rescue a toddler in the building also suffered smoke inhalation, NOPD spokesperson Sgt. Troy Dickerson said, and one of them was taken to an area hospital for treatment.
Firefighters were dispatched to the New Orleans East apartment in the 9000 block of Chef Menteur Highway for a report of a fire at 7:55 p.m., arriving about six minutes later. It took crews about 30 minutes to contain the fire. Crews managed to mostly contain the fire to the apartment of origin.
A second alarm was rung for help in evacuating the entire building, including several residents who had disabilities or limited mobility. Firefighters learned the blaze started in an oven inside an apartment on the sixth floor of the east wing, the NOFD said.
The woman who lived in the apartment jumped from her window. She was found at the ground level directly below her apartment. Firefighters said the woman suffered limited injuries from her six-story fall.
The three officers injured in the fire were all stable as of Monday morning. A total of 20 NOFD units and 55 firefighters responded to the scene.
First responders requested that Entergy determine whether the power could be restored to the east wing of the building. The sixth floor of the east wing and several floors below it will likely be temporarily uninhabitable due to smoke and water damage.
The American Red Cross was called to assist the displaced residents.

Just your daily reminder that Chef Menteur is not an actual chef.

I always thought Sergeant Prentiss Drive in Natchez was named after a war hero. Turns out the guy's first name was Sergeant.

The 9000 block of Chef Menteur is at the corner of Bundy and Chef, not Read and Chef. There's also a multi story senior center called Peace Lake Tower at that location.
