This reminds me of a quote from the movie "Parenthood":

Tod: You know, Mrs. Buckman, you need a license to buy a dog, or drive a car. Hell, you need a license to catch a fish! But they'll let any butt-reaming a-hole be a father.

Apparently, this applies to mothers, too. Prayers for the little girl.

No shite. Brings a tear to my eyes. Can't stand to see kids getting hurt.

Maybe in the long run it's best for her though.

True..but I think it is the undebatable #1 fear of everyone on this earth.. being totally abandoned or alone with truly no family or anyone. I know when I was growing up a kid 2 streets over who we never much hung out with had his Mom, Dad, and older brother killed in house fire. He went into foster care and a few months later (he was 12 or 13) he showed up back at school.. was NOTHING about him the same. He became very quiet and hard nosed. To me, it seemed like his very soul died that day he lost his family. I cant even fathom what its like to experience something that traumatic.

Tragic for this little girl...

Don't mean to be insensitive, just curious...

Did this little girl seem normal? From what you described, she was just sitting there eating ice cream?

At 5 years old, most kids would have enough awareness to realize that her mother was missing. Like another poster described in a similar situation, that other kid was crying his eyes out.

I guess I'm trying to find anything that will cause a mother to abandon her child. While still wrong and inexcusable, if her child is severely autisic, the mother could feel overwhelmed and unable to handle her care.

Again, still inexcusable, but abandonment of a 5 year old child without cause does reflect our sad state of humanity.

That really sucks but honestly that girl is probably better off than being with that piece of shite person.

I called Mesa Police and found out that they found the parent and the little girl was safe. They could not or would not provide me any additional information.

I "think" that I feel much better now.

The little girl did seem normal. I think she did realize that her mother was missing and did not seem that worried. I am not sure if this is not a normal thing for her, so it was no big deal.

Thanks to those who posted responses back to me with encouragement or good thoughts. I have not felt this sick in a long time. Like lsunurse posted earlier, working in a hospital or especially ER, we see things that are just unimaginable. I believe this affected me because it was right there in the front of me. Normally I witness the back end of the situation and am too busy doing the things I have been trained to do to worry about the circumstances.

I think it would largely depend on how competent the people at McDonalds were. If they realized what happened, and immediately were able to help out the child's most basic needs, like ice cream and Happy Meal Toys, then I don't see why she would be that distraught at that age. All they had to really say was that they were calling mommy to pick her up, and than give her that stuff.

My mother is alive and well. Like I said not the same as the little girl in the OP.

Poor woman never had another serious boyfriend though after that. Never remarried, never really dated around.

Just raised her two boys

I am not sure how long she left the child at McDonalds. The workers indicated it had been over a hour

I'm gonna say she is in an emergency foster home tonight. The police would have had to call CPS and they would likely put her in temporary foster until they can investigate further. Or release her into the care of another family member (usually a grandparent).

Either way....that mom will be facing CPS and police charges.

I'll guess mom didn't intend to permanently abandon child. Likely a junkie thinking the play area at Mickey Ds will be a suitable enough baby sitter while she goes off to have "fun" for awhile.

We have parents who treat our unit that way. They will literally leave right after kid is admitted and not show back up until child is discharged.

Lot of people seriously suck and should be sterilized IMO

Sickening!

Nurse- I think it sucks they do that at the hospital but it's better than leaving them alone at mcdonalds. Sucks either way though.

He said in his post that the police wouldn't give him that info. That the little girl was safe was all the info they would give him.
