Problem is when less than 1% holds the majority of the wealth, then creates legislation to retain said wealth. Say what you want about these modern progressives, but the progressives of the past gave us national parks, which stopped massive destruction of our lands and helped poor southerners feed themselves through social programs. Appalachia and Acadia was starving before welfare. Let's not even get started on decade long wars we fight.

I'm sorry that I rely on trustworthy sources, and you rely on Facebook.

The issue of the proper role of government isn't an issue for both time periods?

So based on your assertion... any information or data collected from time past is irrelevant because it happened in the past and not in the present? You are of the mind set that our government is smarter than the people who created it?
It all makes sense now.. good day.

It’s unfortunate that people now have a reasonable expectation that the government will take care of them. That wasn’t the original design.

If we're going to base arguments off of historical quotes, let's at least use quotes that are real.

Jefferson was a brilliant writer and thinker.
The problem is we'd probably be speaking German or Russian in this thread if his ideas had become more mainstream.

Do you think there is a set amount of "wealth" that is shared among the people, so that the rich having more "wealth" keeps "wealth" out of the hands of other people?

Well it's obvious that TJ was an racist and bigot.

Haha... No one is saying that creating parks are bad? Is that the only progressive idea you can come up with? John Rockefeller created the University of Chicago...with countless other tycoons who built big endowments for the beginnings of your en lighted anti capitalistic education. Thanks for the parks though...

Business insider? LMAO
Thomas Jefferson in his state of the Union wrote about the “the freedom of labor from taxation”. He felt government should protect its citizens from internal taxation.
Jefferson’s view on taxes were clear, they were wrong. I think it is better to look at people’s original words so I have put together some quotes by Jefferson on the issue. Jefferson believed large debt and direct taxes were a curse and something to be avoided as it was the source of oppression.
Cheers

A couple more for the panties that are getting bunched...
“If a nation expects to be ignorant and free, in a state of civilization, it expects what never was and never will be.”
“There is nothing more unequal than the equal treatment of unequal people.”

Here is one for those evil tariffs...

In other words...
"I... place economy among the first and most important of republican virtues, and public debt as the greatest of the dangers to be feared." --Thomas Jefferson to William Plumer, 1816. ME 15:46
"As the doctrine is that a public debt is a public blessing, so [the chickens of the treasury] think a perpetual one is a perpetual blessing, and therefore wish to make it so large that we can never pay it off." --Thomas Jefferson to Nicholas Lewis, 1792. ME 8:325

This can go both ways. Lots of things we spend money on that I don't want it spent on. I'm all for a strong military but our military spending is completely out of control.

Virginia Statute for Religious Freedom began simply as Bill No. 82, "A Bill For establishing religious freedom."
When Jefferson learned of the bill's passage, he had the Statute translated into French and Italian and distributed as widely as possible. Seeing the codification of religious liberty as one of the great achievements of his life, Jefferson asked that the Statute be one of the three things (with the Declaration of Independence and the founding of the University of Virginia) to be preserved on any memorial erected after his death.
