which is why most people think the only way to travel through vast amounts of space is to warp space itself.
Probably will never see it in my lifetime though. Theoretically plausible though.

This is incredibly stupid.

Just because we find complex life out there does not mean the this Great Filter is ahead of us. There are billions of stars. Think about that, billions of STARS. Think of the satellites orbiting each of those stars and think of all the possibilities for life. There is a very high probability that, even if this Great Filter is extremely hard to overcome, that it has been overcome more than once.

On the point of radio wave communication, someone hit it, a quantum machine could send messages instantly through S-T...which could not be intercepted.

Think about it, 2 billion years and only 150ish will be spent radiating the galaxy with classic rock. The window in any advanced civilization for radio waves would be small...hobby at best. We are already moving to visible light communication.

How would said life have survived flying through space on a rock? No food or oxygen. How would that life have survived entry into the earth's atmosphere? if it beat that trillion to one odds, how would it have survived crashing to earth? the odds of life coming into contact with Earth are no better than a gazillion to one. It's absurd far more than any number could calculate.

It is only a theory just as any other. The theory states that extremophiles exist on debris floating around in space. Read about panspermia. I believe it is a more credible theory thn life spontaneously occurring on earth.

Whatever the possible answer is, in all the vastness of infinite possibilities one and only one thing is certain:

The answer will not be determined on motherfricking Tigerdroppings.com.

The earth is believed to have been formed a billion years before life came about. Why do you think life would have just spontaneously happened? It makes more sense that various levels of organization occurred for millenia until crude organisms were formed.

if you created a species...how much would you interact with it...just a thought

Did you get that info from TripAdvisor???

I'm not convinced there is intelligent life on Earth....

One important aspect in talking about probability of intelligent life is the concept of deep time. This is one that does consider it, which is good.

Everyone needs to consider that we may not share the same space because we probably won't the same time as other intelligent beings because civilzations come and go and a million years and a billion years is a very very long time.

yep

a planet could have been formed, life begins, thrives for millions of years, planet get destroys, and we could miss that planet by a billion years

But at the same time... with an inconceivable amount of universes and solar systems and planets out there, odds are there is intelligent life. Odds are they will never be able to contact us and we will never be able to contact them.

if we were to find fossilized complex life on Mars, Bostrom says “it would be by far the worst news ever printed on a newspaper cover,” because it would mean The Great Filter is almost definitely ahead of us—ultimately dooming the species.

I guess I'm a big dummy when it comes to the topic...but in layman's term wtf does this mean exactly?

It means something that once existed (like us) is now extinct
