I work for a Fortune 100 company. A very high level manager sent a company wide email with a list of employees that has served in the armed forces and a message to thank our coworkers this Memorial Day.

Awkward.

I'm definitely not one of those guys who moralizes to people about how they should be somber or avoid parties or lakes on Memorial Day weekend, but I have found it increasingly odd that many people – usually non-veterans – have conflated it with Veteran's Day and have forgotten the real purpose of Memorial Day.

Ditto for July 4th.

My father is a full-bird colonel and today he called me and wished me a Happy Memorial Day. I definitely hold today in the utmost regard, but telling people to have a, "somber and thoughtful Memorial Day," just seems dumb.

Considering we laud and praise cowards who can't even bring themselves to stand for the National Anthem I welcome this trend.

All the reminders I've seen are "it's for service members who died, not those currently in the armed forces. " OK hope that makes you feel better you pedantic a-hole

I fondly remember Memorial Day for my ancestors that kept their head down while under fire.

As an Iraq War Veteran myself, Memorial Day weekend is a mixed bag for me. I get people who call me or text me and say "Happy Memorial Day, thank you for your service" type of messages. I don't get mad and politely thank them, but its truly remarkable how many people don't understand the difference between Memorial Day and Veterans Day. On a somber note, Memorial Day is not a particularly fun day for me as it's the day that I reflect on two of the biggest heroes i ever served with that were KIA in Iraq.
