Why this movement lately “reminding” me what Memorial Day is really for?
Posted by DustyDinkleman on 5/25/20 at 8:24 pm448
Seems like the last few years there has been a lot of chatter on Memeorial Day for people to “really remember” what the day is all about.
“Remember, It’s not about firing up the grill with friends and family, but to remember those that died in service”
No less than 5 emails company-wide saying “Remember not to say “Happy Memorial Day”
No fricking shite.
But why do we need to publicly state all of this. It’s pretty much common sense.

Do you make an effort to be miserable or does it come naturally?

It's because back then people actually marched into battle knowing they may die for their country. Now people march to their facebook to battle others not wearing a mask.
So it's hard to actually remember what other generations had to go through and it's sad.

It annoys me when I see people post photos in their military uniforms and praise themselves for being a military hero for Memorial Day. Memorial Day isn’t for that. It’s about remembering those veterans who died. Veteran’s Day is for celebrating those living.

I work for a Fortune 100 company. A very high level manager sent a company wide email with a list of employees that has served in the armed forces and a message to thank our coworkers this Memorial Day.
Awkward.

I propose swapping the calendar slots of Memorial Day and Veterans Day. May needs a 3 day weekend, and it’s only logical to have barbecues and gatherings at the beginning of summer (especially in the North where April/Easter can still be a bit chilly).
So: Veterans Day moves to May, we all get together and party, celebrating the veterans in our families, and just having a good time as summer kicks off.
Memorial Day moves to November, and no day off is required, but we say an extra prayer at church that Sunday as a somber remembrance of those who gave all, with a wreath laying at the local memorial park.

Plus, i do find is odd as a veteran to hear “happy Memorial Day” as a congratulatory message. But, I’ve never spent Veterans Day with family so I get it, as Thanksgiving is 2 weeks later. So, I get it.

Veteran's Day was originally Armistice Day (from the end of WWI), where we celebrated peace rather than veterans
why couldn't vets be given another day? Give them Labor Day, just change the name

Probably because Memorial Day was started as a day of reflection and mourning to honor those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in service of our country. But today it seems a growing number of people no longer do this and instead think of it as a day for parties and cookouts.

This is not close to being factual. It was never intended to “celebrate” peace or anything else for that matter. The first Armistice Day, which was primarily observed in France and Britain was to honor those who died in WWI. In fact in Great Britain they changed the name to Remembrance Day while we changed it to Veterans Day.

If I ever die for anyone, I would love nothing more than for my sacrifice to be remembered by a day of eating BBQ and getting drunk on the lake.
