I enjoyed the "Apocalypse: World War I" series that ran on American Heroes Channel.

It was available on Amazon. There's still a link.

quote:

Drawing from over 300 hours of archival footage, APOCALYPSE: WWI traces the journeys of civilians and soldiers who fought for survival in one of the darkest times in history. Examine an era that fundamentally changed the worldwide balance of power - from the war's outbreak in 1914 through the duration, to the U.S. intervention and The Treaty of Versailles.

Each of the episode below ran 44 minutes.

quote:

1. Fury

1914. Kings rule over the people of Europe. With ultimate power, they lead their nations to war. But in a new era, war threatens to wipe empires off the face of the earth. This is the beginning, of the Apocalypse.

quote:

2. Fear

The war was to be short and glorious. But fear spreads as Germany marches towards Paris. While the generals refuse to change their tactics, men are being killed on an unprecedented scale. An entire generation could be lost and yet the war goes on.

quote:

3. Hell

War descends into hell. The battlefield becomes a slaughterhouse. After 16 months of fighting, five million men are dead. Despite this, neither side has gained any ground until a new and terrifying machine rolls onto the battlefield... the Tank.

quote:

4. Rage

Russia 1917. Tsar Nicholas II is the first Emperor to fall as a result of the war. Will the Russian revolution mean an end to their involvement? A new German offensive could pull the United States into the conflict and fuel the flames of war.

quote:

5. Deliverance

1917. The world is at war. Nations stand on the brink of extinction as millions of men have been lost. The great empires teeter and begin to fall. As the overwhelming numbers of the U.S. Army and its allies brings Germany to its knees, the end is near.

ETA:
Someone put them on Youtube in this odd format You can get a good idea of what them this way. NatGeo and the History Channel also have shown this.

Legends of the Fall has some WWI in it.

ETA:
The Blue Max (1966) is a good movie. FXM shows it at least once a week during the day. It's scheduled for 5 am Central on Tuesday.

All Quiet on the Western Front (1930) is OK.

Beneath Hill 60 (2010) is an Australian movie that looks interesting.

Captain Conan (1996) is a French film that looks pretty good. Trailer

WW2 is too easy, with too much information.

hitler and japs bad, merica good.

SOOOO much more nuance and back story required to tell a WW1 story.

Good Bye Mr. Chips was another great but subtle anti war film about the toll WWI had on the youth of England.

WWI is why we fought WWII. The neutering from the Treaty of Versailles guaranteed it. Hitler called it, "the Dic Tat".

Here are a couple that I would love to see re-made.

I know that they re-made The Razor's Edge in the 80's with Bill Murray (which was actually an excellent movie)...but I would love to see Hollywood put some real money and effort into Somerset Maugham's classic.

What I really want to see made into a movie is this:

If you haven't read it...do yourself a favor and pick up a copy. It is truly excellent. I love the retrospective of an Italian's point of view.
