The CEO of our company canoed the entire length of the Mississippi River when he was in his 20s. He was in between jobs, having just returned from being a war correspondent in the Middle East.
He's about 4 years older than me, and my best life story is that I once scored 41 pts in a JV basketball game against the best team in the conference (and still lost, we went 0-19)

If I recall my Louisiana History correctly, it was named before there were any states by the Indians and it means large or big river. I believe the state of Mississippi was named after the river.

The name Mississippi given to it by the Indians was the name that was used on Robert Cavelier Sieur de La Salle's map of the area in 1695. Mississippi means "large river" to the Chippewa Indians.
