Why not have the more southern one part of vermilion?

Seems a nightmare of logistics.

Several parishes are split.

Hell, Grand Isle is in Jefferson Parish.

What logistics are there to create a nightmare?
The island is uninhabited.

Iberia parish. The weird one is St Martin, but I'm sure there's a story behind it.

Tax base and voter loyalties. But seriously, how much tax base you get from 1/2 of Delcambre?

First of all, it is Iberia Parish, not New Iberia Parish. New Iberia is a city.

Besides that, I am completely unsure what you are talking about because Iberia Parish is not split at all. St. Martin Parish is split, but not Iberia. St. Martin is split because there is a swamp that divides it.

Marsh Island is separated from mainland by the Vermillion Bay and West Cote Blanche Bay.

St. Martin was cleaved in two so to speak when they initially created Iberia Parish in the late 1860's. It was the result of a surveyor's error that was simply never corrected as a result.

Iberia Parish also has the lower island and it is-as was previously stated-uninhabited.

From Wikipedia:

quote:

In 1811, the division of Attakapas Parish created St. Martin Parish and St. Mary Parish. In 1824, St. Martin Parish was divided, resulting in the creation of Lafayette Parish. In 1844, St. Martin Parish was again divided, creating Vermilion Parish. In 1868, Iberia Parish was formed from parts of St. Martin Parish and St. Mary Parish, literally dividing St. Martin Parish in two, as part of Iberia Parish runs between the two non-contiguous parts of St. Martin Parish.

quote:

The parish is split into two non-contiguous parts, because of a surveying error dating to 1868, when Iberia Parish was created by the Louisiana Legislature.

Why don't they make the Southern part a new parish?

Granted the population would probably be 20, but still

They initially drew the lines back in the 19th century based upon the prevalence of a local hairstyle.

They included the areas where it could be found and left out the others.
