IDK about touching their items on the conveyor belt, but if you give sugar britches a pat on the arse to speed things up, things can escalate quickly.

I put my goods on the conveyor. I'm using the conveyor. Wait your turn. What makes you think you have the right to mess with my stuff?

Had this happen to me once in a Target. Young adult male ahead of me in line stopped his intense interest in his phone screen to pick up my product (mosquito repellent), examined it, and then replaced it on the belt. No acknowledgement of my existence. Just hit me as being weird.
