Why is drunk driving such an epidemic in this state?
Jeez. Every week a new story.

All but Colorado, interesting.
Colorado has very stiff penalties for DUI.
ETA we also have a very good public transportation system that services rural and metro areas.

You're just being an honest person. Everyone has, and if they say they haven't, they're almost surely lying or they don't drink at all, or young and haven't much experience with it, or almost never go out.

Texting and driving is actually waaaaayyyyy more dangerous than drinking and driving, but nobody wants to put that stigma on it.
Most people drinking and driving are probably texting too.

Maybe some, not most. It's bad here and we have an excellent public transportation system, and walkable downtown. I think the problem is La is too many people getting out of their DUI's and repeating. Here, once you get one you're fricked.

My buddy got a DUI while we were up there skiing, costs him a ton of money to get it off his record.

I've got another one for you. When your city makes bars shut down at 2 am and kicks people out and everything else is closed like places that serve good fatty drinking food for the most part, and the sidewalks are rolled up so to speak, what do you think is going to happen?

Baton Rouge actually has one of the strictest pretrial intervention programs in the nation. If it's not being enforced on 1st offenses, that's another issue......

We live in a state full of stupid people.
Stupid people do stupid things.
And that stupidity includes many people in Louisiana believing driving while drunk really isn't that big of a deal. Just look at this board, for example. There have been numerous threads dedicated to warning posters where a sobriety checkpoint is located so readers can avoid getting caught.

Or so readers can avoid being illegally detained without probable cause.
I know, I know, the OT is more concerned with security than freedom.

Probably in the $10k range. That's the going rate for first offense.
I have a friend who was in an accident and got one. Cost her around $20k and her career.
I don't risk it in CO. It just isn't worth it. I make sure and limit my intake and space it out with water. You have to take your elevation into consideration too.

That's changing i just finished up mine and had i gotten one a year later i'd be fricked. I fricked up and it was the biggest mistake of my life and learned my lesson.
Having said that i have talked to cab drivers (at least 4) in Baton Rouge who refuse to go to Tigerland because they do not want to deal with drunk college kids. It is not wonder there isn't more DUIs around here with how hard it is to get home.

I'm sure it's been said, but it needs to be said again - because getting drunk is an epidemic in this state.

Negative Nomad sounds like a MADD member, and with that, almost surely a DWI will happen in her near future. Even the biggest opponents of drinking and driving get DWIs.
In New Orleans, I can call United and have them pick me up at the bar. If I am not standing outside, they'll call me. Most of the drivers will not take some random walk ups if you already ordered them for a ride. They don't just give away your ride. When I get home, I can put the ride on my tab and just give them a 5 as a tip. That's about as easy as it gets. That's called incentive. You don't want it to happen, make it as easy as possible for it not to happen. That is a concept far beyond MADD and the like.
I do agree that texting is a huge issue. It is actually worse because people aren't looking at the road for long periods of time. Drinking and driving is just easier to get a conviction, so they go with that mainly
Eta: In BR, unless I got a ride with someone, I drank and drove almost exclusively. I was out 3 nights a week at a minimum. In New Orleans, that number has come down to drinking and driving maybe 5-10% of the time, and that's based on the fact that I don't go out as much
Negative Nancy can get pissed all she wants, that is just what happens. You're not gonna stop me from making a bad decision every now and then.

There's too much money made in DUI prosecution.

Exactly. Stop fighting human nature.
For BR, I'd say that if they want to really make the downtown that they're pushing to redevelop a place of destination, and an economic plus for the city, then don't just put shite down there and expect a miracle to happen. Support it with public transportation and watch it blow up. I guarantee you it will.

What kind of far is that? Geesh

and for most places like BR they don't get it at all why there's a real need for decent and reliable public transportation, not just in this issue, but also in supporting a night life making your city an interesting place
how many cities have late night public transportation? REALLY big ones have subways
but are bus lines really common at night?
quote:
A functioning streetcar system or at least cabs and busses that are accessible
cabs are not "public transportation". they are a private industry subject to market forces (within some regulation, obviously)
street cars are expensive as shite
how many cities have late night bus routes? seriously this is an honest question
quote:
It's just a piss poor lack of planning, as usual with everything you see around you.
i think the lack of cabs shows it has nothing to do with planning and everything to do with the market
