Maybe in your paranoid mind it has

What happens when your kid comes home one day and says that Kobe was overrated, only truly had success when paired with Shaq, and was injury-prone and selfish?

You're not.

I'm talking about rearranging my life for their "memories" and temporary happiness.

You don't have to.

Maybe I'm old fashioned, but my kids aren't dictating the terms in our relationship.

This isn't being an a-hole parent. This is being a parent.

I know that makes me a "bad" parent these days but who cares?

No it doesn't. Nobody will call you a bad parent for not allowing your kid to dictate the relationship.

This entire thread is built upon a very flimsy strawman.

I'm the dad. They are the kids. End of story.

That's right. They need to understand that when I order them a chocolate shake, there's a daddy tax to be paid. I get first pull of that shake before I pass it back.

This. I also don't understand parents who discipline their kids by putting them in timeout for like 10 seconds. I see this with my brother & sis in law

My dad was never our friend going up and we loved and adored him. He could be an arse and was very tough on us. We didn't get the newest video games or nicest clothing. We sure as hell had fishing poles to fish the ponds and guns to go shoot critters with. Bought us POS vehicles at 16 and made us pay for gas and insurance. Made us take care of those 2k vehicles like they were brand new Z71s. No curfew but if your grades were anything less than what he expected you were in deep shite. If you got caught doing something you shouldn't and he found out goodbye life for about a month and hello tractor, push mower, and weed eater on 13 acres by yourself. Today my dad is one of my best friends and I can go to him with anything. He's a wonderful grandfather to my little one and I hope to be half the dad to her as he was to me.
