re: Why is Abita Beer so expensive?

The profit margin on beer is about 75%. Since Abita isn't able to produce as much as the bigger brands I assume it cost them more to make their product.
If a lot more people were willing to pay the price they sell it for and they decide to expand so they can produce more then eventually the price will go down.

However, if you go spend time there and sample their Pilot beers that their Pilot Brewer pumps out on a weekly basis, you'd be shocked at the quality of the products they're putting out.
That is what is so head scratching about Abita. Go to the taproom and there is some pretty damn good beer. They only distribute bad to mediocre beer. I was given one of the new Bubblegum Juicy IPAs. Putrid stuff. The exception to this is the new version of Jockamo. It is actually good. Why they decided to use the same name as the old iteration (which was TERRIBLE), I'll never understand. Easy way to make no one want to try it. Awful business decisions being made over there.

I just want someone local to make a real, widely available pale lager or pilsner in the traditional style. Not a low cal light beer. Not a canebrake tasting pilsner. Not a dry hopped pilsner. Not a strawberry lager. Not an amber. Just a full-bodied malty traditional barley beer. Preferably in cans.

Found the abita rep
It reads like you've never seen the prices of beer before. It's more expensive than the big boys, yes, but it's cheaper than almost every other craft beer around. That's not premium pricing.
Abita is the cheapest craft beer I could buy in Denver. Though I don't know why I'd ever buy it.

That’s funny

Bartenders in Brooklyn and Atlanta are pumped on Abita the same way I’m currently pumped on Spindletap.
I try to explain to them that it’s hot garbage around our parts, but apparently they lack taste buds.
