I always liked how the movie Back to the Future 2, predicted personal fax machines everywhere.
Email and texting just weren't on many people's minds.

Online faxing still are actually faxed though the public switched telephone network. That is why they look like a fax and not just like a PDF or whatever was attached when transmitted and are often in tiff format or some other viewer format when received.

In order to get paid on doing an insurance job for windshields, depending on the insurance company, I have to send in my stuff via fax. It sucks
