Im not dumb. I realize why HBCU were constructed.
Just like I realize the CSA was meant to gain independence from the Union for political/economic reasons (the major one being the slavery).

I was saying that I can endure the fact that you want to keep your statues as long as HBCU exists academically in some form.
Except I don't care about those statues at all.
I don't oppose HBCUs, but if people want those schools, then the statues have to stay. Those schools are as much a symbol of the racism and segregation that existed in this country as the statues. But HYPOCRITES don't see it that way.
I commend you on being diplomatic about this, but what's done is done. If the statues are gone, the HBCUs should be gone. They have no place in this PC world that is being created. Why have any reminder of the way things were?

Many people in the Southern US were upset about the Civil War statue take downs. For a variety of reasons, people had strong feelings about their heritage and perception on modern day race relations.
And that saved how many statues exactly?

How so? Weren't HBCU's created because blacks weren't allowed to go to 'regular' colleges? Seems more like a product of racism against blacks than the other way around?

Wasn't the entire reason for tearing down the statues and renaming the buildings and roads specifically to deny and erase and mention of Southern historical value?

XULA produces majority of pharmacists in the gulf coast surprisingly.
Also puts in a lot of good, qualified students into graduate schools and professional schools.
One of the best neurosurgeons in the gulf coast was a XULA graduate

They are a symbol of the way things used to be. Blacks want to be equal in every way to whites, they don't want anything that represents the past that discriminated against them, but they are completely ok with institutions continuing that were only formed because of that discrimination.
It's hypocritical. They want to erase the past that offends them, but are ok with anything that spawned from that past.
ETA: And fwiw, I believe every human being should be treated the same. No one skin color or race is better than another. But it's idiotic that one race wants to play revisionist with history, but only with the parts of southern history that were negatively related to racism and segregation.

So years ago, we didn't let blacks go to our schools. They want to be educated so they go and build their own schools. Now it's 2017 and what are they supposed to do? Tear down all these universities just to make the whites feel better?
And just so you know, any white person is allowed to enroll at a HBCU. Most just choose not to

The irony in that is just perfect. Isn't that why they wanted the statues to be torn down? To feel better?
You're missing my point here. They wanted the statues torn down because they represented racism. Those universities only exist because of that racism.
If you are going to act like it didn't happen and remove every reminder of it, why do those universities get a pass? Positive or not, they only exist because of racism.
I don't really care either way. But don't go around acting like you want to erase racism from history but leave institutions standing that only exist because of it. If there were no racism back then, those schools would have never even been built.

You do know that white people can go to those universities don’t you?

Yes, but I fail to see why that is relevant. I never argued that the institution itself is racist or discriminatory.
Honestly, it isn't even a race thing to me. How many of those Universities actually provide a better education than another school of similar size? Is anyone choosing Grambling or Southern over Tulane or LSU? Two brothers in Opelousas just got accepted to Harvard and Stanford. Does anyone thing they would choose Howard or Xavier over Harvard or Stanford?
So what real purpose do they serve?

I can't even tell what you're gripe is with these schools and what you "fix" would be. You're all over the place

Honestly it boils down to a few reasons
1. Costs and Location
Some people prefer the lower cost and for whatever reason find it in their best interest not to relocate. The HBCU happens to be in better proximity.
2. Career path
To be brief, what the school offers its student may be more appealing.
For instance, people bring up XULA as a better HBCU. While true, it is focused primarily in medical sciences. I actually considered XULA, but they didn't offer what I was looking for.
Nothing is wrong with that, but if a school isn't offering something in your range of interests, why go ?
As to the Harvard / Stanford comment, it is great that they made it in. Hopefully they pick fulfilling majors. I am not knocking IVY caliber schools.
However many IVY grads who have admitted that unemployment or unfufilling jobs can still happen to them. Major can matter more when it comes to career goals. You go to those schools to establish 1st class connections.
Don't take my word for it, do your own research. An objectively better school isn't best for everyone.
3. Social Inclination.
Irony that I have to repeat this, but people flock towards their own.
I have mostly white friends. But most people want to be around their own kind (ie race, SE status, religion, etc.). Their is a sense of community I get around other smart blacks that is different than at a traditional school.
That's prejudicial, not racist.
To be fair, if I applied myself more, I could probably still get into Hampton or Morehouse. (I've got the research background for it). And work experience can be very helpful for certain graduate programs.

Shitty degrees for those who can't cut it elsewhere

Exactly. White kid wants to go to a historically white school and it's no big deal. Black kid wants to go to a HBCU and it's racist.

Can't speak for everyone, but I made it at La Tech. I could have easily went to ULL for grad school or opted out for trade school after graduating (wanted a different career outside my degree).
But I realize I'm NOT a traditional HBCU student.

It’s a small school, but there are those who love it.
