You've gained weight over the last ten years and have more surface area to dry now. Don't blame the towels for you getting fat.

Rules for towels:

Only 100% cotton
Only white
Only wash with detergent
Only dry with other towels
Only bleach occasionally

Microfiber towels don't dry, neither do synthetics. Cotton is best. Using fabric softener when washing or drying dowels will reduce their drying effect.
