Why don’t potheads like to tell people about MJ’s effects on heart rate?

First of all the stuff is glorious when smoked (or so I’ve heard ) but how the frick has no one ever had a heart attack from that shite? It can boost someone’s heart rate to almost double what it was before and all I hear from the pseudo-doctors is that it’s actually good for the heart or strengthens it. It’s a fun substance but it’s not a cure all or some perfect drug with no downfalls.

ETA: If anybody actually has some real info on its effects on the heart feel free to correct me, I just don’t think most of the shite I’ve heard is true.

Yeah basically the conclusion I’ve come to. I wish there were unbiased studies done on this drug that fall somewhere between “it will destroy you” and “it will make you 10x the person you were before”.

First of all, you'd be a fool to make your life choices based on the DRs of the OT. Second, that effect wears off after awhile and your heart doesn't speed up near as much as when you first start smoking. Your pseudologic is funny because it is the exact same logic I used when I was younger to justify doing blow on days ending in y. Now Coke never stops working your heart out and I have a difficult time believing all that stress on my heart made it more fit.

See I’ve never heard anyone say that the racing heart goes away with tolerance so that’s a good thing if true. And I’m not using pseudo logic. If it speeds your heart rate up to double what it was before you smoked than that can frick up people with HBP or an unknown heart condition. I’m just saying that maybe some of the negative effects should be put out there along with the good so people can make more informed decisions. As in those in the medical community not using bias in what they promulgate so we don’t have to piece together what the drug actually does to the body.

You're going to trigger some folks with this thread. Marijuana does place additional strain on the heart, and can increase the risk of heart attack. However, it's just probably not going to affect someone without pre-existing cardiovascular problems.

It’s one of the reasons I’m extremely big on federal legalization. I just want more research done on more willing participants. It seems like someone with HBP would either think it’s a miracle drug or death sentence depending on which particular doctor or stoner they’re talking to.

Marijuana clearly can have both positive and negative effects on users. Besides the effects it has on the heart, it's detrimental to developing brains. Your memory may suffer if you're a habitual user, but I've read that it bounces back when use is discontinued. There may also be a link between marijuana and psychosis. However, I know less about about these purported links, and I'm sure they are disputed by proponents.

On the other hand, marijuana has helped a lot of people dealing with cancer, epilepsy, chronic pain, etc. There is also evidence it can help with depression, PTSD, and other mental issues.

I honestly don't think it's my business if an adult wants to use marijuana regardless of these benefits or risks. It should absolutely continue to be illegal for kids, but I think even the biggest stoners would agree with that.

I’d be willing to believe that the effects you’re describing or probably more linked to smoking weed, rather than the THC itself. I’d be willing to bet that one gets the same effects from smoking cigarettes.

Edibles is where it’s at.

I find that when I smoke a lot indoors or "hotbox" too often or for too long, my heart rate becomes rapidly accelerated and I get super paranoid. When I have fresh air available I'm 100% fine no matter how much I smoke.

ETA: I have completely blacked out after emerging from a multi-hour hotbox sesh in my younger days. Like one minute I'm walking and next minute I'm face planting. As I've matured, I have maintained responsible use.

Smokey wasn’t joking on that freak out.

I’ve noticed a rate increase but it’s more pronounced if you get paranoid. I learned quickly to just chill and it leveled out.

Also, much of it has to do with inhalation/holding versus just a normal drag. Never had issues with edibles.

Not an answer to your question.

Just an observation.

My 83 year old Mother and all her friends are taking CBD now. After a lifetime of "Marijuana is bad",all these 80+ year old women are using a product that is derived from Marijuana.

It’s not really much different than the effects of caffeine. Too much and you can end up with high BP, heart rhythm issues, heart attack, etc. Or people can have a sensitivity to it (some can’t consume it because of anxiety it triggers). I’ve never heard of anyone saying marijuana strengthens your heart.

Obviously if you have underlying health conditions anything you consume, even basic vitamins/supplements, can enhance those issues.

And depends on why you’re consuming it. In terms of links to psychosis, I’d like to see more legitimate studies. At first blush, most of the cases we’ve seen are in young adults where certain types of psychosis naturally tend to come up. It also makes me wonder how many are undiagnosed and using marijuana to self medicate, especially as expensive mental health services and mediation can be.

Like a lot of other legal substances, it’s not without cons. I think most just believe the pros outweighs the cons. And I’ll take THC for pain management long before opioids.

scientific links
How about just one?
quote:

Cardiovascular effects
One of the few things scientists know for sure about marijuana and cardiovascular health is that people with established heart disease who are under stress develop chest pain more quickly if they have been smoking marijuana than they would have otherwise. This is because of complex effects cannabinoids have on the cardiovascular system, including raising resting heart rate, dilating blood vessels, and making the heart pump harder. Research suggests that the risk of heart attack is several times higher in the hour after smoking marijuana than it would be normally. While this does not pose a significant threat to people who have minimal cardiovascular risk, it should be a red flag for anyone with a history of heart disease. Although the evidence is weaker, there are also links to a higher risk of atrial fibrillation or ischemic stroke immediately following marijuana use. Consistent with these links, studies by Dr. Mukamal and colleagues also suggest that marijuana smoking may increase the long-term death rate among heart attack survivors.
