When you're booking a flight, it's much cheaper to book months out. If I'm sitting at home on a Friday, I should be able to check flights that aren't sold out and book at a discount for that day or next. This isn't the case. Why not?

Because the first seats sold are the cheapest. The last seats sold are the most expensive. Most people booking at the last minute have no options and have to take whatever they can find.

A person who needs that seat that late is usually business flyers who have much bigger budgets. One of them is worth like three of you.

Correct.

The OP makes intuitive sense - "we're about to take off, we should squeeze a few extra bucks out of the empty seat". And the risk of a full plane will deter people from counting on standby.

And it always messed up the non-rev passengers hoping for a seat(s). Was a darn cheap way to get around when you get a aboard and hear that door close!

The government subsidizes them so much, they aren't compelled to make money.

Both American and Delta have a service you subscribe to that sends out deal on discounted seats, usually on Wed.night for flights still open through Sunday of that week. The problem is you pretty much need to be close to a Hub like DFW, Memphis. Atlanta to use them. They will have stuff like DFW to Memphis one way on Saturday for $39.

They have a hardship part for funerals/deaths... you have to send them a copy of death certificate... we did that once but obviously not fun, was still expensive

Because it severely limits the amount of time DHS can perform their background check on those passengers.
