nah its pretty common to hate the place where you grew up, especially at a younger age

I just had a conversation last week with a guy that grew up in Denver and now lives in Shreveport and said he would never move back to Denver and loved living in Shreveport.

One of the reasons BR sucked for so long was because the Baptists were in power for decades and tried to squash drinking and Rock n Roll

this

and I'm not saying that I'll never move away if the opportunity presents itself

but while I'm here, I'm going to make the best of it and support the things, places, and people that are trying to make it a better place as much as I can

Having grown up in Shreveport, that is an insane thought to me.

You don't sound like the type of person who would be happy in Louisiana.

If you are holding out for good infrastructure, functioning public schools, and responsible, effective government, then you will be waiting forever. Simply put, Louisiana is not a state for someone like you.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love to have those things. But there are other perks that are more important to a real Louisianian:

The outdoors,
Drinking culture,
Mardi Gras,
LSU sports,
Cajun and Creole cuisine,
Low cost of living,
Laid back attitude of joie de vivre, etc.

The list goes on. More or less, it is a great place to live if you don't take yourself too seriously. If you demand smooth roadways, $12 domestics under strobe lighting, and strangers who are insular and standoffish, then I would recommend staying away.

Why Nola? We should nuke North Louisiana if we are gonna bomb some place in the state. North La contributes nothing to the state except rednecks who are Bama and Cowboy fans. It's bout time North La gets off Nola's tit and starts doing their fair share. I'm sure the states coffers are filled to capacity with the money coming in from North La's hotels and tourism. The Duck Commander Bowl is a gold mine for the state!!

Anyone who let's a holiday or eight home games (only of which 4 are worth attending) affect their choice of where to live is a goob.

Not a Louisiana native. Never lived there for more than a couple of weeks at a time, but this kind of self-loathing can come from anywhere. We Southerners are the best at it, though.

I agree with others who say any place is what you make of it.

That said, Louisiana has great culture, original culture, great music, great food, and a soul that many other places lack. Sure it has its troubles, as does any place. Look at the positive OP and stop trying to blame a state for your own shortcomings.

You should have included the weather. It's way too fricking hot here. If I move away it'll be due to the unbearable Summers, combined with the shitty schools/crime.

All our confederate flags are shooting up the ghettos, giving poors AIDS, and telling baws to skip school, don't worry about saving money and they'll be set for life with an oilfield job.

Sure, but are those inherently worse reasons than roads and corrupt politicians (as if they're unique to LA)?

I couldn't imagine living somewhere because of the roads.

Perhaps not, but they certainly could be a factor. You are likely to drive on the roads every day. Shitty roads and construction that lasts for years is liable to frustrate a lot of folk.

For me it's just the sheer amount of trash in this state. People shite on Lafayette but it's a good bit easier to navigate away from the Ronnie's of the world there than most places. New Orleans too.

I'm okay with Lafayette, and grew up around the area. I didn't realize how many douches were there until I moved away. So much aggression in the bars there
