I think parents tell their kids about Santa because it's magical and fantastical. They have fond memories of what the lore meant to them growing up and want to recreate it with their kids. I understand the downside of lying to your kids about such things, but I also understand the joy that kids feel about the
entire Santa tradition.

Well, I think it's important to give them some kind of alternative to the regular old Jesus/Yaweh/Allah paradigm. Most people are quick to label him the Prince of Darkness, but he is also the Light Bearer, the Prince of the Air, and the Defiler. I like that my kids put on the robes and... oh. Santa. Sorry never mind.
