Why do similar radio stations go to commercials at the same time?

For example in Dallas 103.3 is ESPN and their competitor is 105.3
They always seem to be on break at the same time, wouldn't it be smart for 105.3 to stagger their ads so they can get people switching over from ESPN?
I'm not an ad or marketing expert it just seems to make sense

Essentially a product of programming. Be it talk or music, stations will only go without commercials for a set amount of time, and then have a set amount of time for 60 second spots. If they start this pattern at the top of the hour, sooner or later you'll have them line up.
It's no different with broadcast TV with commercial breaks at essentially the same time. Flip channels between ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX during primetime when your show goes to break, and I'll bet you most others are either in commercial, just about to, or coming back from one.

It's targeting traffic. 6:40 people are on their way to work. Just before noon, and right around 5 there are always commercials on several stations.

Agree, its a traffic/news update deal. Not sure why they don't stagger still but your assessment is correct sir.

Typical radio programming. It isn't as noticeable on music stations, but on talk radio they have soft breaks, up to the hosts usually, and hard breaks, set by the station. Especially on syndicated shows. Top and bottom of the hour are the usual hard breaks. Soft breaks between. Radio segments are usually anywhere from 10-14 minutes and there are 4 per hour. I hear the local guys sometimes say they're going to break early because of a longer segment coming up. Or they can run longer if the current segment is good. The only thing is that has to be around the soft breaks.

All the AM stations that I listen to do this at :30 after. All of them.

TV channels do that too. Especially cable news channels.

It just seems like a station that is say 2nd or 3rd in their market, like 105.3 is 2nd to 103.3 in Dallas would change up their hard breaks. For example Instead of shoes starting at 5:00 and ending at 6:00 they go from 5:02-6:02.
It seems like they would get those that are default 103.3 listeners to listen to them for 2 mins at least, and maybe some of those people will like what they hear and stick around...

You need to become a 1310 The Ticket P1 & never look back to ESPN radio.

So you realize that changing stations to avoid commercials is futile as a disincentive to switching.

Literally the only radio station to still play music in the morning (6:50-7:30) is 98.9 for me. Every other motherfricker is having their little morning talk show and I hate it. It's the morning, I don't have time to listen to their bitchyness and I just want to listen to some music dammit
