Why do places without waiters/waitresses make you tip?

I've been at 2 different places, Izzos and City Pork in Baton Rouge, in the last week where both times, when I go to pay, they've turned the computer around and made me select a gratuity amount of 15%, 18%, or 20%. It doesn't make sense to me. I wouldn't tip if I was ordering take out, so why would I tip if I order and pay at the counter and don't have a waiter?

Why are people so burdened by this. You can tip anybody who does any service for you, ever.

It’s your money, you can willingly give it to anybody. You can also not give it to them.

Perfect opportunity to tell the cashier you want iced tea. You'll be at the seat by the window. Return the confused look with raised eyebrows.

It’s a generic POS system they and many other restaurants, hair stylists, and other businesses use. Just hit NO tip. Nobody’s making you do anything. Good Lord, please find something substantive to get mad about.

fricking waaa waaa

I dont think its a 'try' and make you tip. The option to not tip is clearly there. They just make the tip option much easier.

Id rather the tip option be there so the jackoff in front of me that is bad at math doesnt make me sit there longer while my food gets cold

It essentially replaces the tip jar on the counter. Not obligatory to tip.

People are in your face with it now. It's the same at CCs. I'm not tipping you for a $2 coffee, and I'm about to quit going to places that beg me to tip for a service they don't provide.

BS many many places out there will automatically add a standard gratuity to the bill, YOU HAVE NO CHOICE at those places, you can increase the standard gratuity or you can pay it and just choose not to go back there.

Where are these places? The only time I’ve ever seen a mandatory tip is when a restaurant adds a gratuity to parties of 8 or more and I totally understand why they do that.

Having worked in the service industry when I was younger I under this as well. I also wish they would push a mandatory tip for all tables sat after 9pm. Those tables typically suck arse, run you all over the place and leave you like a dollar on a $50 check.

Other than actual sit down restaurants that automatically add gratuity to parties of 8 or more, where do you see this happen?

Had this tonight at Louie’s. Picked up food at drive-thru and they charge automatic 10% Gratuity on bill. Not sure what they did to earn this.

If you go in and the employees treat you well you tip. If you order takeout you just grab your food and go. If you go and they make it, the employees have an opportunity to earn a tip. It's really not difficult
