Business is so good I guess they can pick and choose which jobs they want and which one's they think will make them the most money.

I had a small construction job that I needed done recently that involved partially some roof work on a garage. I called two of the big players, and three of the smaller guys based on recommendations.

The two bigger companies sent guys out that were almost like dealing with used car salemen. They must have figured out that I wasn't going to be an easy target, so they never even gave me a quote.

Two of the the three smaller guys came out and one just threw a stupid number at it because he must be so busy he didn't care. The one who never showed to look at the job told me three different times he was going to come by, but never did.

Finally settled on the other, but took forever for him to show up to do the work.

That's not the Mexicans you want to hire, if they were worth anything they'd be working already.

OP go to a job site, find the Mexican that speaks English and explain what you need done.

IF it's a job that is not complicated and no worries with them having any insurance, etc that route is fine.

My neighbor and I recently had to get a tree removed that fell off of his property. I got two quotes that each came in at $1800(which is exactly what my insurance company gave me). This was for my side of the job on my property.

My neighbor cut a deal with me that he would bring in a friend of a cousins, etc (aka known as one of his South American relatives). We all chipped him and let him do the hard part. My out of pocket was $120 and two beers.

Have a bunch of handyman type stuff to do around the house. Replacing some rotten wood, refinishing some shutters and doors, stuff like that. I figure a couple thousand in work total.

Do it yourself? They don't want your money because the ones that actually know what they are doing are probably laughing their arses off at an "opportunity" like this.

Growing up, this is the kind of stuff that the man of the house would take care of.

Was this back when the man would hitch the wagon to the mule to go into town to get supplies for the job as well.

There's your problem.

You figured wrong and it's not worth the time to try and convince you how much it will really cost you.

I was thinking the same thing on the way to work this morning. It's no different over here in Gulf Shores. Can't find a damn contractor that will actually show up to quote a job.

Makes me wish I knew that trade. I would have plenty of work just by showing up!

My dad has been trying to start up a side business doing exactly what you are describing. He lives in Alabama, but we will be going to a wedding in Lafayette the 3rd week of June. He can swing by before, earlier in the week. I am serious about this.

we are redoing a bathroom and have a great guy doing the work. i told my wife to keep fricking him while i'm at work so we dont lose him.

seriously though i told her she needs to make up her mind on other projects around the house while he's still here because once he's gone, he's got a list of waiting customers a mile long and i doubt we'll ever see him again.

if you have a decent job ($15k bathroom remodel for us) then you need to leverage that into getting all the other small shite done if you have someone that can do it because you'll never get them to come back once they're done with the initial job and fat payday.

I turn down jobs all the time. I pay my carpenter $300 a day. Id lose money refinishing shutters.

We build new shutters for customers that are big projects and even with those you aren't making much money.

If I went and looked at that job, unless you had me build new shutters, replace the fascia, and do the painting, it wouldn't be worth it to coordinate that.

As a GC I hate to say go find someone with not much work or a mexican, but thats probably what you need to do. Make a post on facebook of what you need done and you'll find somebody.

If I went and looked at it, I would at least tell you on the spot I probably wouldnt have time to do it. If you dont call people back enough it will hurt your business in the long run because you get too many negative referrals.

That's kind of what he's asking for though. No one wants some dickhead GC to do shite like refinish shutters and replace rotted wood. That's a sure fire way to get 100% fricked in the poop shoot.

I think what the OP is complaining about is the lack of that late 50-something year old guy and his son that used to exist for jobs like that. They're still around but EXTREMELY hard to find. I've found a few via the Nextdoor App.

Ok I didnt get the impression it was GC's that were coming out. Just random people in general and that the frustrating part is that you cant even get a call back.

I was basically just saying there isnt much money in that type of job regardless of who it is and that I would at least let you know that I wouldnt be able to do it.
