Why do people buy new jeans that are already torn?

Would you buy a box of used condoms? A hamburger that someone already took a bite out of? Do the ripped jeans come with gluten free Tide Pods?
Yes I am melting at 1:30 AM over this

Because it is in style, I guess. People do things a lot more stupid than that. Why do they watch the garbage Hollywood is putting out? Why do they eat Tide Pods? Why do they re-elect crooks?

Because most people today are far too lazy to get the holes in their clothes by doing hard work and simply wearing them out for that "faded" look.
Now the companies bleach them then stone wash them to get the weathered look and go about cutting slits in the fabric to simulate a well used pair of denim jeans. Saves the buyer all that sweat needed to do it the legit way.

Because the big girls like them...
Side note: when they first came into fashion in the 80's, we use to put a 2x6 in the pants leg and shoot it with a shotgun, made the perfect distressed hole...

Jeans should be stiff AF.

Same reason we wore these in the early 70’s. (Minus the black guy)

Damn, that brings back some bad fashion memories. Polyester Leisure Suits, huge bell bottom pants, platform shoes, enough Dep in your hair to pass for a hard hat------

Why do people wear blue jeans?

This isn't a new thing. Where have you been?
Ripped jeans were also sold brand new in the 80s.

When I was a kid my mom would wash my jeans and put those metal stretchers in the legs to make them crease like they were ironed and go hang them on the clothes line in the back yard.
The sun dried those pants in about an hour in the summer and they were as stiff as cardboard when putting them on right after that.

Those are "Guess" jeans and I'm guessing around 210 lbs.

Affluence. When I was a child living in poverty, it was embarrassing to wear jeans with holes in the knees. Mom would patch them but it was still a stigma.
Decades ago it was a stigma to have a sun tan. Women who worked in the fields had tans. Ladies, with class, kept white skin. Then transportation improved to the point, ladies could travel to a beach, tans became fashionable.
