You really don't think that standing around videotaping shite and taking photos to post on social media has anything to do with social media?

Your point was that instead of helping, they were just filming for Facebook. That isn't true. They aren't helping because of the documented bystander effect.

quote:

The bystander effect, or bystander apathy, is a social psychological phenomenon in which individuals are less likely to offer help to a victim when other people are present. The greater the number of bystanders, the less likely it is that any one of them will help.

They aren't helping because each person thinks someone else will help. They aren't saying "nah can't help, gotta Facebook live this."

I'm not really sure what your argument is, but it's pretty obvious to me that the internet/ social media is a cause in people losing social skills. I guess you can argue otherwise, but this is just my observation.

I was saying the example of a bus stop was silly.

A lot of people read discussion forums, where there’s certainly plenty of learning to be had. I learn new shite all the time when I visit the various forums I peruse.

In fact, I tend to find fiction novels/fiction TV shows a bit childish (not in content, but in the idea of a make believe story). I could argue that the things I discuss/read in forums challenge my brain far more than a make believe novel.

But people stuck in their “phones are the devil!” mindset automatically assume the book (regardless of content) is the superior reading material.

Exactly. Social media has tons of downfalls but this generational romanticism gets ridiculous.

You could argue literally anything.

But reading books is factually better for you than browsing nonsense on your phone.

Well yeah, duh. And learning about a subject by reading about it on your phone is better than browsing nonsense.

What the hell does this have to do with anything? So now we are judging the CONTENT of what someone is reading? I assure you there were plenty of people before social media sitting a bus stops or waiting rooms reading tabloids, Cosmopolitan magazines, or some other low level entertainment.

LOL @ you if you think everyone was interacting with strangers between reading scholarly articles while waiting at a bus stop.

My point was that reading books and magazines doesn't give you a false sense of social interaction like the internet does.

I don't really know why we're arguing. I'm pretty sure we can all agree that the internet and social media have it's positive and negative effects.

But that’s just it.

The people who only scroll through Facebook weren’t reading quality books to begin with.

Those who would ordinarily be reading actual useful texts are probably not just mindlessly scrolling through Facebook at all times.

* And yes, I make some awesome sandwiches.
