When i was in 6th grade a good friends dad shot himself.
The obit said "a very sudden illness" even though it was common knowledge he committed suicide.

When my sister died a few years ago, we put the cause of death in the obit so that people wouldn't ask questions. It was very sudden, so we knew that people would think suicide, but the reality was that she passed out at work, and a subsequent scan found a brain tumor- she was dead 3 days later.
Some people think that things like that are private, but we decided that we did not want rumors floating around, especially a place like Shreveport, where shite gets started quickly.

I wouldn't automaticaly assume someone who died of pneumonia had AIDS. A lot of old folks end up dying of pneumonia or a random virus in the hospital due to a compromised immune system.

The better to be in an obit than in a actual news article...
My thing is, a days worth of obituaries might feature people who died a month apart, so I always miss someone I knew in there bc I'm not reading it every day (especially relevant before Facebook )

I noted my wife died from Cancer in her obituary. I think it is a good idea.

I'm 36 and don't ever remember the reason for death being mentioned commonplace

It used to always say heart attack, cancer, died in sleep, car wreck, etc.
It stopped about the time the muppet guy died of "pneumonia".
