Back in the mid-80's, all 7-11's closed and became Circle K's. Anyone know how or why this happened.

When we go on vacation, my kids get excited to just be able to go to a 7-11 to get a Slurpee.

Seems like 7-11 shut down all Louisiana operations after years of fighting a bad LA economy. Circle K stepped in and acquired most of their locations.

They sold off most if not all of their Houston stores too. Still see them in Dallas or Austin, but the chain isn't nearly as prominent as it used to be.

It is in my part of FL, not that its high prestige or anything, but Circle K is more trashy.

There is a bunch still in Houston you just don't notice them. They brand themselves as Speedy Stop on their fuel signs and that is what most people notice.

Do Little General stores still exist in NO/MS Gulf Coast? I don't think they were ever in BR

I can't find a single bit of info about them online

I remember being sad as a young child when the 7-11's closed and the Circle K didn't have the Slurpie machines.

I moved to Louisiana in '89 and I remember thinking, "Circle K... WTF is this?" Used to guzzle some Big Gulps back in the day.

Just did a trip up north and 7-11 was everywhere. I miss the big gulp and slurpee.

7-11s are so far behind the times for convenient stores. With Quik Trip and Race Track growing, 7-11 is a dinosaur. They are always dirty and smell like crap because they are trying to cook a variety of items in a microwave. They are also mostly franchised anymore to people that don't have hygiene on their top 20 important traits to exhibit.

I looked on their store locator and they just show a couple locations in outlying areas that are tied to Exxon pumps or something.

There was a news story earlier this year about 7-11 returning to Houston: story

Most of the locations I knew growing up in the 80's turned into Stop N Go's, Circle K's and other brands. Valero now has a lot of the old locations that are still standing.

Circle K recently bought out Cracker Barrel convenience stores so those should be changing soon also.

7-11 fun fact: there's no shite twice as many 7-11s in Japan than there are in America. Basically every block. Slurpees for days.

Apparently it's basically a Japanese company now.

quote:

In the late 1980s, Southland Corporation was threatened by a rumored corporate takeover, prompting the Thompson family to take steps to convert the company into a private model by buying out public shareholders in a tender offer.[12] In December 1987, John Philp Thompson, the chairman and CEO of 7-Eleven, completed a $5.2 billion management buyout of the company.[13] The buyout suffered from the effects of the 1987 stock market crash and after failing initially to raise high yield debt financing, the company was required to offer a portion of stock as an inducement to invest in the company's bonds.[14][15]

Various assets, such as the Chief Auto Parts chain,[16] the ice division,[17] and hundreds of store locations,[18] were sold between 1987 and 1990 to relieve debt incurred during the buyout. This downsizing also resulted in numerous metropolitan areas losing 7-Eleven stores to rival convenience store operators. In October 1990, the heavily indebted Southland Corp. filed a pre-packaged Chapter 11 bankruptcy in order to transfer control of 70% of the company to Japanese affiliate Ito-Yokado.[19]
