Why aren’t churches taxed?

I think that churches should be taxed, regardless of whether they preach politics.

I think many non profit and not for profits are tax exempt, no?

Joel Osteen’s hair dresser is his tax.

It makes so much sense to not tax churches, up until the point bad actors organize certain activities to obtain this tax-free status under the guise of being a church, just like so many other non-profit ventures.
I'm not sure there is a really good answer to solving this problem.

By many if you mean all, yes

Question, do you believe in the concept of separation of Church and state?

What exactly do you want taxed?
Church employees pay income tax.
Want the government to take a cut of the offering? Besides sounding weird, if you want to treat it like a business, that seems like taxing capital contributions by members of an LLC.

Answer: what a stupid question

I was once told bc the members are already taxed and a church is the people. The building holds them. Maybe that’s not why churches aren’t taxed, but it makes sense.

This is the short answer. Unless church staff are embezzling, any payouts from the church to staff or anyone else gets taxed.

The OG lobbyists were the deacons of the first churches in the US.

Just like every other non exempt business

Taxed on what? Be specific.
Are dues not taxable to any other nonexempt entities?

what’s the difference in that and literally any other non tangible selling business ?
They aren't selling anything. These are literally donations.

What dues?

Is a church designated a non-profit? Maybe that’s why. I don’t know the answer to your question. It’s not selling anything and they do community work and give. It was just something I’d heard once re taxes.

Of course

You don’t have to sell anything to have income as defined by the IRC

So do taxable entities. Makes no difference.
I’m fine with churches being tax exempt, but there’s a lot of dumb shite in this thread
